What a Weekend!

Will be back soon with the winner!

I'm back from Quilt Market and enjoyed every moment. My only regret... I needed more time and should have taken more pictures!
Unfortunately we just had one day to see the booths and meet with the vendors. The other day was spent in classes and lectures. If I would ever go again, I would definitely drop the lectures and show up just for the show itself.

The first day was Sample Spree. not sure how people take pictures during this event.. honestly, it's just crazy. Well now I can say I did it. Picked up lots of goodies and was completely exhausted after just an hour. Funny thing happened the next day.. Pulled up my blog reader and found this picture over at the Jolly Jabber...

I circled what caught my eye. It was my daughter in the middle of they mayhem trying to get past the crowd with her own goodies. I'm happy there was no evidence of my own weak moment at the Moda table. LOL!

The next day we were on the floor nice and early but we still didn't have enough time to see it all. I was able to see many new designers and new upcoming fabrics from old favorites, and I also had a close encounter with my favorite designer....

Yup. I finally met THE Carrie Nelson. What a wonderful lady. I think I babbled... so embarrassing, lol! Told her I had started Opening Day and thanked her for my Fit to be Geese Rulers. I then stalked her, dragging my daughter over to a book signing. We chatted some more about my daughter's unique name and she shared a story of a friend of hers that had a more challenging name than my baby. That meeting was definitely the highlight of my trip. I'm such a fan girl!

The next day I drove home with these...

You might ask how I ended up with three books? Well, one is my signed copy, the other is my daughter's copy (she overindulged a bit and needed me to send her some of her stash through the mail), and the last one was waiting for me when I got home, since I pre-ordered my copy!

Well... since it's my birthday next week, and some say that giving is better than receiving... (I'm really working on that one - lol!) I've decided to give away the copy I ordered.

YEAH!! A GIVEAWAY!!
To enter, leave a comment sharing a memorable Birthday story. I'll pick a winner at random on Nov 10th (my birthday)!
Since I don't have many followers you have a good chance of winning, so leave a comment and help me celebrate my birthday!!

Update: I have noticed that many comments don't have an email associated with it. Please make sure that you leave me a way to contact you. If I cannot contact the winner I will have to chose someone else. You can either update your profile or leave your email in your comment. Thanks!!

Oh no, I'm the first person to comment, the first person to comment NEVER wins.....Happy Birthday!

My best birthday story, the year I turned 50 I celebrated from January 1 to December 31. Yes the whole year was "The Year of Thelma" I spoiled myself the entire year and even talked family members into doing the same. I figured I was turning 50 regardless, might as well make the most of it.

I'm so behind on my email and blogs, you've been busy!

Oh you are so lucky to have met my quilting idol in person! The market looks and sounds like a blast from all the photos I see in blogland. I would absolutely LOVE the book so here is one of my all time pathetic birthday stories. My birthday is three days before Christmas and my brother three days after Christmas. We are two years apart so shared mutual friends. Our gift wrap was usually Christmas wrap "because it was handy." We had to share a cake because we had "enough sweets" in the house with the holidays. Oh...and mom didn't make the cake she would purchase it at the grocery store and because it was the holidays the cake had poinsettias on it! One year mom told me to pick one of the gifts from under the tree for my birthday present....and my brother had one gift left under the tree to open on his day three days after. Because of this I always swore my kids were not to be born during the month of December. I turned 50 last year...I'm thankful that my husband and kids make great effort to have my present in pretty birthday wrap as well as a SPECIAL cake and flowers that don't scream holidays. OH....I have to add this....I get calls from "friends" on my day to say we will get together after the holidays as they are busy prepping for Christmas....oh gosh is that ever hurtful and they have no clue!

You are lucky to have a pre-holiday birthday...ENJOY!!!

My husband's birthday is the same day as yours! My best birthday was when I was in high school and was planning a surprise birthday party for a friend whose birthday was the day before mine. Turns out, it was also a surprise party for me! I almost didn't go to the party. Why? I don't remember. I just remember being very surprised when I got there and found out it was a double surprise party.

Happy Birthday! Market looked like it was a blast! It's on my someday list...
Birthday stories? About 15 years ago my birthday came. No one remembered. The first time someone wished me a happy birthday that day was about 7 at night when my dad called. My husband got home right before the kids went to bed and my son reminded him it was my birthday...he thought it was funny that he forgot but I was annoyed. Flash forward a year later...DH thought it would be a great laugh if he PRETENDED to forget my birthday again! Needless to say, it was not a fun birthday, for the second year in a row! Somehow, I still managed to stay married to him and can laugh about it now! :o) He's made sure to never forget again!

Thank you for sharing your photos of market. What a fun and exciting event!
Meeting Carrie Nelson makes it more memorable.
I spent my 50th Birthday floating down the Chatahoochee River with friends and family. I got my knees scraped, and had cuts and bruises, but it was so much fun! My husband could hear me laughing the entire time.

Don't worry. I babbled too when I met Carrie. The first words out of my mouth were "I love you"...LOL. She was so much fun to talk to. Carrie is the most awesome person on the planet! I am so glad my local shop owner invited me to attend market with her.

And lucky you for getting a signed copy of her book. We had not been at market that long when we got to her booth and she wasn't there...which we later found out is because she was off signing books for everyone.

Quilt market must be such fun. I hope to make it one of these days! My most memorable birthday was years ago when I was 20-something. I decided I wanted to live in Egypt for a while. My first job when I got there was working on the logistics for a huge 3-day charity gala Jihan Sadat was hosting. The first night Frank Sinatra sang at the Sound and Light show at the foot of the Pyramids. The next night was a huge fashion show (featuring Pierre Balmain jewels) around the swimming pool at the Mina House Hotel, with the Pyramids looming in the background. I don't remember which event took place on my birthday, but it was very exciting!

When I was 40, my friends held a birthday event for me in a funeral home! They even managed to put a fake death notice in the paper. I was picked up in a limousine from the funeral home. It was a strange, strange day. I was presented with a pair of slippers from the funeral home's supply of burial clothing. They didn't last.

You are so lucky getting to go to quilt market! I am glad you got to go :) My favorite birthday memories are those of my husband's. He was 26, and we found out we were pregnant with our first baby, then the next year on his 27th birthday, we found out we were pregnant with our second baby! The third year when he turned 28, he asked me that for his birthday we aren't pregnant again (and we weren't haha!) Our two kids are one year and one day apart in age! You have to love life!

First I want to wish you a Happy Birthday (in case I'm too lame to remember on the 10th) LOL

Second, your daughter is adorable!

Wait, wait, I forgot to tell you about my favorite birthday experience. LOL

Like Thelma, it was the year I turned 50. I was beyond thrilled to be 50 and I told the entire world that I was now 50! I felt validated and actually I've enjoyed every minute of the 50's. :-)

An early happy birthday to you!
A very special birthday memory for me happened over 20 years ago when my kids were young. My husband travelled frequently for his work and was often away from home on our anniversary. Well, this particular year he had to be away on my birthday. My daughter who was about 8 took her little brother who was about 4 to a nearby (no streets to cross) store with their pooled money and bought an angel food cake and a tube of red decorating frosting. They came home and decorated the cake to present to me after we ate our dinner. It was such a sweet gesture from my 2 little ones!
Thanks for the giveaway.

Wow, what a grat givaway. Hope you have a Happy B-Day!! Well birthday story. Think it would be when I was at Disney World for my big day. They give you a Birthday Pin to where all day. The cast members wish you a happy B-day everywhere you go. Also got a gift card and fast passes to ride the rides. Later at the Parade I was picked out to do a little dance on Main Street. That was something that I would have choose not to do, but it's only one day. That would have to be the best birthday.

I'm going to subscribe to your blog through google reader. I'm looking forward to getting to know you.

I always thought birthdays were special because if it was your birthday you got to pick what we were going to eat. Or even eat out. In my family eating out was very rare.

My Happiest Birthday was for another reason. My two sons (now teenagers)used to into the patchwork shop and choose Fat Quarters for my birthday. One would always choose nice flower fabric and the other one who was just a littlie at the time chose flying sheep. Yes I have used some of it but I still have some for memories too. My whole family has always supported my passion and I love them for it:-)

Hi Sandy, Thelma sent me over... I will be bookmarking your blog! It looks great. I think birthdays are great (even thought I have had 56 of them)!! What other day do you get presents AND cake?? A most memorable birthday was when my coworkers surprised me on my 40th with one of them dressed as Barney the dinosaur! (I hated Barney then! - like him now... that must have something to do with being a Gramma). We had dirt cake with gummy worms (because they knew I hated worms). They actually were the greatest group of coworkers ever. Sadly, our company moved so we have scattered. I would love to win this book. I am also a huge fan of Carrie!

My brother isn't really a singer - he's not tone deaf or anything, but has been known to change key mid line and wander off a bit from the notes. My Dad, on the other hand, was a lovely singer. A couple of years ago on my birthday my Dad was at my house when my brother rang and started to sing Happy Birthday, so I put him on loudspeaker. It was perfectly in tune and really lovely. So much so, that my Dad didn't recognise his own son's voice til he finished and spoke! We laughed so much, including my brother.

How lucky of you to go to market! I love hearing about it but don't think I'll ever be able to go.

As for memorable birthday stories, how about the two years everyone forgot my birthday. Yep, they did it twice. But in their defense, we were a military family in the middle of moving both times. The first time I was 5 and the second I was a teenager. We were so busy, I didn't even remember it myself until the end of the day! But they've been great and remembered the next 20 some of them.

Happy early birthday!

They made a super cake to match and I was thrilled. - kim email gurry(at)telus.net

There were about 10 kids...all of a sudden the neighbour's shed went up in flames. I dialed 911 and the fire truck arrived (with sirens!!)and put out the fire and then proceeded to give all 10 kids a demo of the fire truck, a ride with sirens...they were THRILLED!! The BEST party EVER and No I didn't start the fire!! :o) (The neighbour had been burning leaves and then went in to have a shower...!!)

One of my favorite birthdays, was when I had promised to take a neighbor to a doctors appointment. I was gone most of the day and at that time my children were little so hubby stayed home with them. When I returned, they had made pictures, a banner (which I still have) and a lop-sided cake. I was so surprised and happy that the mess they made was overlooked for that moment of joy.

My youngest was in kindergarten, when I went to her school open house. The teacher started laughing when she saw me. It was my birthday and we have a family tradition that the birthday person has to wear the birthday crown. I found out later the real reason she was laughing was because my daughter had been telling everyone that her mom was 83 (I turned 38 that year).

Oh my gosh! I was so delighted when you posted the picture with your daughter circled because when I first saw that picture, during market, she caught my eye and every time I looked at it after, she always got my attention. I remember thinking how pretty that young girl in the crowd was and how wonderful it was that a young teenager like her would be 'into' quilting! Okay, Your birthday is the 10th??? Well, that's a very special birthday in our house. My hubby was in the Marine Corp during the Vietnam era. He spent the first 13 months of our marriage there, truly...he left 4 hours after the wedding! But I digress, back to the birthday. Though he was only in the Corps for 4 years, every single year since, (a LOT of years) he has celebrated the Marine Corps birthday that also happens to be...yup, November 10th!!! So Wednesday when we are at the Marine Corps birthday luncheon, I will be wishing you a Happy Birthday as well!!! Thanks so much for a chance to have Carries' new book. I just adore her. For a bday story..one year I spent the whole year being 26...when my birthday was approaching I said something to my sister about turning 27. Her bday is three days before mine and she is two years younger than me. She told me that I was only turning 26 and not 27 since she was turning 25. I argued with her insisting she was wrong and we did the math and lo and behold all year I had aged myself a year! I think when I am 47 I will be 46 all year to make up for it!

I don't have any super birhtday stories, but last year on my birthday it happened to be on the day of Homecoming at the high school I was teaching at. (I retired in May, hooray!) The faculty had been working in secret for several weeks on a big presentation for the pep assembly. We did cheers and lots of building stunts as a challenge to the cheerleaders. It was amazing. And on my 50th birthday, I did a cartwheel into the splits in front of over 900 people. The kids talked about the assembly for weeks.

i hope yours is a great day!!

Birthdays were always a huge ordeal to my Mom. She made our birthdays so special & made us feel so loved, even as adults. She passed away 4 1/2 years ago the day before my 25th birthday. So unfortunately I share my birthday with a not so great anniversary. HOWever, 4 years later & I'm finally able to enjoy my day again. I would have to say this year (my 29th) was the best birthday since her passing away. Just feeling loved from friends and family really makes it great :) We celebrated my *last* birthday celebration- as next year I will not be 30, but it will be the 1st anniversary of my 29th birthday! :-D

Happy Birthday! Meeting Carrie was your early birthday gift, I guess, along with the three copies of her new book. That's a celebration in itself!
My most memorable birthday was the year I accompanied my husband on a trip to Italy. The trip was wonderful. But we flew home on my birthday, Alitalia, and that was a horrible experience. They weren't able to seat us together, and although we tried to trade seats to be able to sit together, the lady I sat beside did not want the opportunity to sit beside her husband. So I spent my birthday alone on a long flight, which made it a non-event.
Would love to win the book.

Happy Birthday!

My favorite birthday story is the year 1996. My husband's bd is February 13th, so we usually combine his birthday and valentine's day. Well this year I had planned a steak dinner and bought a bottle of wine for the occasion. I had a big surprise for him. He came home from work and I handed him a little box and when he opened it there was a pregnancy test in it that had a big + sign on it. He said "whose is this?" and I said "mine" and he said "how did this ever happen??" We had been married 18 years and were told we would never have any kids, and my being 38 years old and pregnant was quite a shock. Well our only child is now a 14 year old boy. He is still the best birthday, or valentine gift either of us could have ever gotten. :)

My favorite birthday was my 40th and my son got up on our roof and set off fireworks as I drove in the driveway from work. It was embarrassing, loving, happy, sad and worrisome (he was on the roof! - fortunately he was 17!!) all at the same time.

happy Birthday today (well in Australia it's the 10th!) My hubby forgot my birthday one year when we were in England on holiday. I bought myself a present and when he asked why I bought it I told him! He was so embarassed, but I was happy I got a great gift for myself!

First, Happy Birthday and second, what a nice thing to do on your birthday...to give away a gift! Quilt Market sounded wonderful and wished it was closer. Some people were doing plays on dates and numbers so I just had to add my own "story". This past Oct. 20th my husband and I celebrated our 20the anniversary....yes, it was our 20th on 10-20-10 We went to Reno and I actually won $100 by playing the number 20 all night on roulette. Have a great Birthday!

Hi Sandy, Loved hearing about your fun at quilt market, and I'm so glad your sister sent me your way. How cool you took your daughter to market, double fun.
My birthday story, I guess it would be my first friend birthday party. I was in early junior high and had a slumber party with girlfriends. You know Mom must have stressed out because that is the only party I had with friends. LOL!!! Never thought about that before.
Anyway, Happy Birthday on the 10th, and thanks for celebrating with us, I love Carrie Nelson, and would enjoy her book if I am chosen. :)

I must admit that this last birthday will be the most memorable for me. I retired in July 1st and as a reward for working so many years, we went on a Rhine River Cruise! After the cruise we staying in Amsterdam for three days. Our last day there was my birthday. We had rijsttafel! It is Indonesian and is known as the rice table. There were eighteen courses starting with half a lobster! Wow! Delicious! I will never forget this birthday!

Well I don't have to tell you how jealous I am that you went to market!!! Just amazing :) OK I don't have too many amazing birthday stories, but I think the best one was my husband's 7 years ago. I had found out 2 weeks before his birthday that I was pregnant with our middle boy and somehow managed to not tell him. It was the hardest 2 weeks ever!! I wrote it in his birthday card and when he read it he couldn't believe it and was so excited! Best birthday ever:)

What a wonderful Market.
2 years ago we moved closer to our children and grandchildren. We have done a lot of things to make this house our new "home". This year for my birthday my daughter brought pots, plants, planting soil and everything needed to make me a "tipsy pot" stacked pot planter. It is beautiful and every time I look at it I am reminded of her love.

Happy Before your Birthday! My favourite birthday was my 25th, my Dad gave me a beautiful clock that year, everyone else forgot about me but not Dad! I love that clock still 25 years later.

Happy Birthday!! My most memorable b'day story is not actually about my own b'day! LOL For my dad's 75th b'day, last year, HIS BFF, Brian, asked me to loan him the spare set of keys to my dad's house..and while dad, DH and myself spent the weekend at the beach, Brian smuggled a big ol' LCD TV into my dad's house and set it up! The look on my dad's face was priceless when he walked into the house after the getaway weekend to find everyone in his livingroom watching HIS gift! LOL

Happy Birthday.
My best birthday story was when my best friend had moved from Illinois to Kentucky and since I had never flown before my husband sent me to visit her.

Sending you birthday wishes. I for one enjoy my birthday every year. The older I get the better it is. So this past birthday was awesome (my mom came to visit for a week) but I'm sure next year's birthday will be even more awesome.

I would love to win the book. Carrie and Rosie are my idols. My best birthday was when I turned 36! My daughter was born 5 days later. What a great present.

Well, you may not believe this but I will turn 60 next week and I have never had a birthday party or suprise. Living in a small rural town though I do remember when I was in elementary school and my mother brought a brown paper lunch sack for each member of my class to school filled with penny candy. There was one for each of us!

I love Carrie Nelson. My memorable birthday was that my mom decorated cakes for extra income and one year she had a brand new barbie inside my cake. The bottom of the dolls dress was all cake, it looked like her dress.

My most memorable birthday was when I turned 9 - my birthday is New Years Day and my party was a few days after the big adult celebration. My mom had made potato salad in this huge metal bowl for the adult party. So at my party we used this same metal bowl to sit in and spin!! That was by far the funnest and coolest party - now that we are adults we still talk about spinning in that bowl!!

When I turned 30, I was single and had recently moved to a new town. My co-workers surprised me with a birthday supper at a restaurant in a nearby town. That was very much appreciated.

I turn 60 in Feb. I think I'll borrow your idea of celebrating every day for a full year. Thanks!

My best birthday was also my worst birthday. When I turned 50 my daughter actually died for a few minutes. Long story of blood transfusions and etopic pregnancy, but the best thing was that through very odd circumstances she is lived and every year on my birthday I remember how grateful I am for HER life.

Happy Birthday, Sandy!
The only birthday celebration that even comes to my mind, is eating in my favorite local cafe and the waiter accidentally spilling a pitcher of water on me. We dried up what didn't soak in, smiled and laughed and carried on with the festivities, it really was a great evening!

Happy birthday!

I have a very clear memory of my seventh birthday...my mam made me a pink fairy castle cake (complete with sugar cube battlements!) and, whilst I adored the cake, I was very disappointed that I couldn't see any fairies!! I think it was the same party that I felt so embarrassed being the centre of attention when everyone sang 'Happy Birthday' that I joined in the song. When someone commented that I couldn't sing the song to myself I burst into tears and tried to hide under the table...

Happy birthday and thank you for the chance to win!

My most memorable birthday story happened a few years ago when we were in the middle of a drought. We hadn't had much rain in the spring and it was looking grim for the summer months. It was already topping 100 at the end of May. I kept joking with everyone that all I wanted for my birthday was some rain. I arrived home from work to find that my two youngest children had decorated the house, made me a birthday message out of rice crispy treats (my favorite) and made a full course dinner (including candles) After dinner, we went out to our covered porch to find my husband had gotten the hydrangea I had been wanting. My son went into this speech of how they wanted to get me the perfect birthday gift so they were going to MAKE IT RAIN! (That's right, he yelled it). Nothing happened so he got a little dramatic and yelled it again. Suddenly it started to rain, I was tickled pink. I started to tear up but sat for a half hour listening to the rainfall. What they did was go into the attic, and out onto the roof. They set the sprinkler up so that it would only rain over the covered porch. I was so thrilled that they put so much effort into giving me exactly what I wanted for my birthday. I don't know if anything will ever measure up to the thought that went into that gift. I was truly blessed.

Happy Birthday and many happy memories.
